It begins with a dream.

Whether it was inventing my own games as a kid or directing impromptu plays at slumber parties, I’ve always loved to create things from scratch. Now, I’m lucky enough to make a career out of it—and help others do the same.

Born on the southeast side of Chicago to strict parents, I was grounded a lot—for no reason, might I add—so I had no choice but to be creative. I spent much of that time drawing, writing and dreaming. That passion led me to Dubuque, Iowa, where I studied English and journalism near the banks of the Mississippi. After college, I settled into my first place—a cedar-walled “garden apartment” in Highland Park, IL, a literal stone’s throw (I was a baseball pitcher) from the Metra tracks that took me into the city whenever inspiration struck. At the time, I thought I’d be a writer forever.

Then, early in my career, a boss saw something in me that I didn’t—an ability to inspire people. She might not know it, but I owe her everything. Leading a team has been one of the most rewarding parts of my life, second only to my family. I met my wife, Karen, at work—she was also a college athlete—and together, we have two amazing kids, Natalie, 17, and Benji, 14, who keep us busy with their own sports and fill our lives with joy.
